COACH YOU BLOG
Hygge to the nth degree
11/12/2023
Do you miss the sun too? The dark days make me gloomy: S.A.D. perhaps. But with a large chunk of our year in the UK barely waking up, I have taken a leaf from the Danes, (who have it worse) and embraced a Hygge lifestyle: conviviality with a sense of contentment and wellbeing.
After nose biting, rosy-cheeked exertion in the outside, walking and rowing in my case, there is much to be said for candles, hot chocolate and a good book.
And should it end there? I believe Douglas Adams’ “The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul” aptly describes the time rather than a dark depressing Scandi pic.
I propose that, as the nights extend in length to the Winter Solstice on December 22nd, this is a perfect time for gentle introspection and simple pleasures. Yes, I know there’s lots of great telly to distract ourselves with whilst the rest of nature goes into hibernation. But let’s make time to fill ourselves up with good food, philosophical conversation and love in all its forms.
Let’s not wait for January when we will want to be gently moving forward again.
Now is the time to reflect on the past year and what it has brought us.
Now is the time to let go of what has not served us.
Now is the time to plan who we want to become next year.
Now is the time to decide where we are going and how we will get there.
It is, of course, the perfect time to come into coaching. In the meantime, I have attached my annual Completion Document for you to enjoy.
Happy Hygge Holidays!
COMPLETING THE OLD: 2023
Step One: Looking at all the areas of your life, reflect on 2023.
List all of your Wins, Gains, and Breakthroughs. And mark each one as either Complete or Incomplete.
Find a date in which you might want to complete an incomplete item. For example, you finished a marathon, but you haven't completed on the fundraising side. Set 1st February to complete that. I sometimes find with a win, or a success, what completes the win is some kind of ritual to celebrate and acknowledge myself.
2. List all of your Losses, Disappointments, and Breakdowns. (And accept them.)
And again, mark each one to see if you are complete or incomplete, and set a date to complete them. (You might not know HOW to complete, never mind, just set a date.)
Step Two: Look at 6-8 lessons you have learned this past year that you want to carry into 2024. Remember, when thinking of what to include, that you will want to consciously use these lessons in the coming year.
Here are some examples:
I learned last year:
• Planning is good and I prepare for a Saboteur attack with Activate Power .
• Follow the plan and be in THAT moment - have a notebook to record distractions and return to focus.
• Make time for learning every day.
• Morning routine is a VITAL start to my day!
In a coaching session, we could look at this list, refine it and clarify the lessons learned.
CREATING THE NEW – 2024
Step One: Imagine ahead to December 2024
Write a list of your Wins, Gains, and Breakthroughs for 2024. Be specific and write them as though they have already happened or they happen routinely.
(For example, "I regularly bring in £x per month and limit working hours to x.") Look at each area of your life and make the list as long as you like. In your coaching session, we could look at how to make this list happen.
Step Two: Give the year to come a Name.
If next year was a movie, what would it's title be? Some past names have been: Year of “Brave and Bold!” Year of “Make it happen“
This process is yours to make your own. Many clients have loved the focus it brings to the New Year and the opportunity to consciously create your life.
Make 2024 your most potent, enJOYable year so far!
HANDY WORKSHEET: to print or to copy into your journal or wherever is most convenient.
