The 5 Second Rule or just do it ...
30/4/2015
We've all had those moments in business, a slump, a rut, inertia or maybe even burn-out: we're stuck.
So much to do that we're like rabbits in the headlights. We scrape by doing the minimum whilst those small steps towards brilliance we had in place go unfinished, ignored, unstarted even. Days, weeks and months go by and we wonder why we have not yet reached our goals.
April, for most of my clients, has been about planning to succeed. Together we've been putting in place bespoke schedules to allow time for every element of their work, their families, their fun, indeed their whole life. Now, all they have to do, is do it!
And there's the rub.
We have all felt that moment, that inkling, that urge to do something. You know the one, it's like a spark in your belly and an echoing idea "I could phone them", "I could ask them to dance", "I could do it ..." and then we wait, how long is it? One second, two? The fizz of excitement begins to fade, our inner critic starts up "What's the point?", "Why bother?", "You'll just mess it up". We distract ourselves with something banal and safe and the moment has gone.
So, my challenge to you all in May is not to wait. If you can just get started in those first five seconds you CAN make it happen. Who knows what it will bring but at least you can say you tried ...
