Coach Yourself to the Best Valentines Day Ever …
31/1/2013

Hooray, romance, flowers, chocolates, an early night …

All these things we conjure up in our wishful thinking. While our other halves are busy thinking “splash out an extra fiver this year on ‘Tesco Finest Flowers’, we’re thinking “mmm …Paris…” You can perhaps see the potential for disappointment here, tricky.

This is all about Valentines Day as an expression of love in terms of stuff; things, gifts. Don’t get me wrong, flowers and presents are great, and if Valentines Day means things that sparkle for you then go for it. But love…is it really quantifiable in terms of hard currency? We all know it’s not about the money: it’s the thought that counts.

Then what do we want?

Analysis from research into happiness carried out over several years with half a million people concluded that “Teaming up is the number one route to happiness”. According to Dr Nick Baylis, a Cambridge University Psychologist and Times Columnist, strong positive relationships are the most important thing to work on to ensure our long-term happiness.

We complain about how commercialised Valentines Day has become but how often do we take the time and money to celebrate the most important relationship in our lives?

So what if we took another perspective on Valentines Day? What if this year it wasn’t so much about expressing the love you share but more about having you and your partner fall in love, all over again?

Remember your first ever Valentines Day…

Go on…take a minute now to close your eyes and really savour every moment.

You were wearing … flares and platforms/safety-pins and ripped jeans/lycra and legwarmers/Burberry and tattoos.

The music was …Beethoven/Bobby Crush/Boomtown Rats/Busted.

You were at …a restaurant/the theatre/the school disco.

And you were both really trying, weren’t you? Both dressed up, polite and flirtatious, being terribly attentive – the best possible you.
