High Heels, Glutes and Honing Your Process!
31/5/2013
Have you ever been doing something for ages with some success only to realise that you’ve missed something critical in your learning?
I’ve been rowing for over a year now and I knew something wasn’t quite right. Hubby is studying for his level 2 coaching rowing course and decided to help. Despite our 20 years of blissful marriage, it’s not a good idea to try and coach your nearest and dearest. So, after a hissy fit and strong words in the middle of the river, we took apart my whole technique. I was frustrated: he was frustrated, because we couldn’t see what was wrong. The only thing he was unable to check was what I was doing with my feet inside the shoes … and there it was … my girlie penchant for high heels had left me pushing away the boat with the balls of my feet. When, apparently, one is supposed to connect with the boat with the whole foot, pushing down with the heel to activate the glutes.
It is taking a good deal of effort to change my technique … going right back to that place of conscious incompetence.* But, hey, if Tiger Woods can do it, so can I!
If you are not getting the results you want, try breaking down the whole process into its component parts and practices. Then hone each element to establish it is fit for what you want to achieve.
*Learning Process 101*
1. You don’t know what you don’t know – unconscious incompetence (or, ignorance is bliss …)
2. You know what you don’t know – conscious incompetence (“agggh, I’m rubbish at this!”)
3. You know that you know – conscious competence (“hey, I CAN do this …”)
4. It’s automatic – unconscious competence (“Do what? Oh, yeah, that’s easy”)
