Revolution or Deviation? What’s your plan for 2013?
31/12/2012
It’s that time again … the end of one year and the start of a new one. They say to forget New Year Resolutions because they only work for a small percentage of people. So, what if that percentage included YOU?
Resolutions work when you are ready to receive them. They are not limited to New Year’s Day it can be any day that you decide things have got to change. Every day is “The First Day of the Rest of My Life”!
Transformational change is exciting, invigorating, renewing and deeply fulfilling. You may already have been through that with me as your coach. However, today I’m just pondering the difference of a very small change. You know the analogy of the aircraft pilot … if you adjust the course by only one degree you could end up in an entirely different place over the course of the flight. And this, I think, is how we can make significant long term changes in our lives without the stress of making a big decision, announcing it to the world. So, what does that look like?
It could be just putting aside one hour a week to start writing that book you’ve been thinking about … by this time next year you’ll have invested 52 hours more than you did this year.
Perhaps it’s not going on some massively restrictive diet losing 10lbs in a week only to pile back on 12lbs once the diet is over. Perhaps it’s just saying “My body is not a dustbin!” and scraping the stuff you really are too full to eat in the bin.
It may be as simple as creating a mantra to say to yourself when your mood begins to dip. I remember the year 2010/11, I lost 19 people in one year and just kept saying to myself “Hey, I’m alive”. However sad, stressed or overwhelmed I became, at least I had the possibility to do something about it, I was alive so I had a choice. A little dark, but it worked for me … you might want to go with something like “this is easy, I can do this” or “just get started” or “I can choose”.
Maybe it’s just saying “No”, just for today, it could be saying “No” to alcohol or being tired or prevaricating or TV or saying “No” to keeping quiet … just for today and then maybe tomorrow … what might happen then?
Well, you might stick to your plan, realise your vision, achieve your goals …
or you might just find yourself more relaxed, in integrity, comfortable in your own skin.
So, my challenge for your 2013 is to decide to shift one tiny thing and see where that takes you.
Happy New Year!
