UNLEASH YOUR PASSION AND MAINTAIN MOMENTUM TO GET RESULTS (or, things I wish I’d done when I was starting out …)
29/4/2014
If you were starting your business today as a twenty-something, those giddy days of passion, inspiration and irrepressible energy, what would you want someone to recommend you do? This was my dilemma in speaking to a group of young creative business people at an exhibition organised by Good Story. Good Story is an organisation supporting young creative entrepreneurs with mentoring and support in finding grants.
As a coach today I spend much of my time reigniting the passion of forty-somethings for their life and business. So I wanted them to harness these young people’s enthusiasm and focus it going forward. Of course self-knowledge plays an important part in that. Knowing what fulfils us – our Values – and honouring them on a daily basis maintains that connection to our passion. Managing our self-limiting beliefs, which pop up any time and often when we push beyond our comfort zone, goes hand in hand with the fulfillment proposition. Those pesky gremlins want to keep us small, want to keep us from being all we can be …
Being clear about our vision for the future, writing it down and reading it every day reignites that excitement of possibility. Vision boards are good for the visually inspired, audio visualisations work also and the Stanislavski method of physical embodiment of the emotion works for everyone with practice.
In business terms Simon Sinek’s "Power of Why" TED Talk demonstrates the importance of connecting our customers to our passion for what we do over and above what we do and how we do it.
Maintaining momentum comes with self-discipline and organisation – those corporate concepts of time management of course come in useful here but so also does the requirement for balance across our whole life. Of course, in the first few months we work long hours to the exclusion of all else but it’s unsustainable in the long term. Having balance across our whole lives gives us a greater sense of control, fulfilment and supports our health, physical, mental and spiritual enabling us to fire on all cylinders, maximise our creativity and thus our potential.
Having a non-judgemental sounding board to support decision making, that will challenge, cheer lead and provide accountability is an incredible advantage in maintaining motivation. This is of course why I’ve volunteered to be one of their coaches.
